Photoshoot FAQ’s
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A PHOTO SESSION?
Simplicity is key. Ultimately, your wardrobe is your choice unless you’re doing a styled shoot. However, here are some things to keep in mind when choosing your outfits:
Aim for neutral colors and subtle patterns (solid colors are preferred). Simple, solid colors generally look best on everyone AND put more emphasis on the subject (you).
Dress comfortably! Don’t torture yourself. Your photo session can be tasteful AND enjoyable.
If you’re deciding specifically between black or grey, go grey. Grey hides lint, dirt and dog hair much better.
WHAT’S THE MOST SLIMMING OUTFIT TO WEAR?
Wearing all one color can make you appear longer and slimmer due to the uninterrupted lines it creates. Darker shades can create the illusion of a slimmer physique as well. Believe it or not, fabric choice can make a difference too. Denim, silk and cotton tend to be the slimmer choices while corduroy, flannels and leather often appear bulkier.
HOW DO I LOOK LESS AWKWARD IN PHOTOS?
As contradictory as it sounds, movement can be your friend in a photoshoot. Engage in the moment and your surroundings. You will appear more natural/candid and your positions won’t be forced. Use some props and experiment. Props, can give your hands/brain something else to focus on. It creates some interest in your final pictures and as a bonus it’s usually more fun! If you’re not into props, create angles with your hips and shoulders. Avoid dangly arms by putting your hands in your pockets/belt loops etc. Trust me, anything looks better than dangly arms.
WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF DAY FOR A PHOTOSHOOT WITH YOUNG CHILDREN?
Everyone will tell you an hour or two at sunrise or sunset is the best time of day to schedule your photoshoot (assuming the sun is visible for golden hour). However, that isn’t always ideal when you have young children.
If you have youngsters, schedule around feeding/napping/bed times. Forget golden hour if it means everyone will have a positive experience. Shooting during golden hour is not a RULE. If midday is what works for your family, that’s completely fine. We can always find shade!
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID WEARING FOR PHOTOS?
When it is possible, avoid wearing glasses/sunglasses
Avoid wearing hats (especially in heavily, shaded areas)
Leave wallets, phones, keys and any other bulky objects out of pockets
Try to avoid wearing anything with distracting logos
Avoid tanning/burning the day before your shoot (no one wants to look like a lobster in their family photos)
ARE MY PHOTOS GOING TO BE POSTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
I can’t speak for every photographer out there, but I always ask prior to posting a photo session on social media. If you are uncomfortable with you/your children’s images being posted, than I will respect your wishes. It is always great when I can show the community what I have been working on, but I won’t pressure you or make you feel obligated.
